How a Dashboard Can Help You Find Your Dream Job

What is your dream job? It's fine even if you do not have a specific answer straight away. There is always a key to unlock that door, as long as you are in control of your life and do not get stuck trying to find your career path.
So how do you take control?
Build something to help you keep track of your options, progress and goals. Here's how to start.

1. Know your talent and purpose

Be aware of your inner talents and link them to your career objectives. Having a dream job means doing something that you truly love while fulfilling your life goals.
In order to discover your greatest talents, follow your heart and trust it. Ask yourself truthfully about what you like, and whatever pops up in the first place is the best answer.
If you're still uncertain, seek help from people around you because sometimes you just cannot realize your own situation until you hear it from others. Ask your friends about what they have in mind. Ask your lecturers and classmates what your specific approach to solve a problem is. Ask your co-workers what your unique approach to perform your role is.
Tips:
  • Take a couple of credible strength tests (e.g. StrengthsFinder)
  • Conduct an online survey among your friends, classmates, family and lecturers - those who understand, study or have worked with you before. Let them add in new characteristics or vote for existing ones. Get the results and look at it as a reference to understand yourself better.

2. Never give up

No matter what happens, stick to your dedicated plan. Is it possible to achieve a target without any commitment?
It’s worth saving some hours thinking about and writing down everything that you might need to do in order to get your dream job. How do you see yourself in the future? What can you achieve?
Tips:
  • Create a checklist, or a reminder of most important things to do everyday, every week, every month. They keep you focused about your goals and purpose above. (Check out Momentum - this is my favorite todo list creator).
  • Keep a record of what you achieve. 2 months or even 2 years later, you will clearly see the steps you have taken to get your dream job.

3. Earning to live

Be honest with yourself : what is your basic financial need?
You cannot survive at your dream job if you can't make ends meet. Do you know how much money you need? What type of job you can do to cover at least all your basic expenses?
Tips:
  • Start applying the 6-jar money management system if you haven't. Track every cent you spend with a simple spreadsheet and check if your dream job salary can help you satisfy your financial needs.
  • Be mindful of where your money goes, and discover ways to balance outgoings with your incomings.

4. Is it really a so-called “dream job”?

Any chance you would do your dream job for free? If it is a yes, you are on the right track. Are you happy doing this, and are you in good spirits? You understand well how dissatisfaction and stress can defeat your commitment, don’t you?
Tips:
  • Track your moods doing different tasks and at the end of each week, you’ll know when to recharge your energy and when to escape.
  • Make your own rational decision. You can ask for others' advice but don't rely too much on that. Also consider seemingly weird choices such as working for a startup in Vietnam.

5. When you will be able make a “dream” come true?

When it comes to the time frame to accomplish a goal, it is not the same for everyone. If you’re clear about your target and current position in reaching that achievement, you will be able to figure out where you are in the grand plan, and estimate the time and effort needed to finally reach the goal.
Tips:
  • Set the timeline yourself to track your progress and scale how long it is from this moment to the important day. It would be a powerful source of self motivation.
  • Write down milestones when you achieve them. This is useful not only for reviewing your progress but also for adjusting your goals when needed.

Start making your dashboard

In a nutshell, what you need is a dashboard of your dream job, what can help you get control of your career path and take the right decision. Graphical charts can show you where you are, help you understand your strengths and weaknesses and link them to your career objectives.
Don’t stop finding your dream job and fulfill your career aspiration. Just be patient - “There’s no such thing as an overnight success”. And finally, each time when you are successful in achieving your “dream job”, start looking for your dream promotion!
