Volunteering at Hampton Park: gained so much experience
1. First student: help him with the Business Management
Background: Pakistani, havent done the Unit 1-2, go straight to Unit 3-4
He was having a bit troubles reading and understanding english. He cant get the main idea of each department's roles and responsibilities in a company
Structure of the homework exercise as following:
- Operation: Main role, It is important because, Give an example (use textbook question)
- Finance:
- Sales and marketing
- Human resource:
- Technology support:
First ask him to read the paragraph corresponding with each department, find any words he dont understand (e.g: termination, dismissal, etc) that prevent him from understanding the role of each dept. I tried to use simple words to explain for him (e.g: termination means stop, dismissal means you meet the employee and said You are fired). I also teach him to pronounce some hard words but encourage him to get the general idea of the paragraph, no need to understand words by words.
Finally, he got the key ideas of what each dept does through my explanation of using simple words. I am happy !
2. Second student: help her explain to her friend about the Health subject
Background: Student B may have missed a lot of classes of Health so she needs a friend to help out with to prepare for the SACs. Her English is not good, so we had to find simple words to explain to her. I guess she is from the Middle East as well, with the over her head
Student A: Miss, I dont know how to explain the word "Limitation" to her in this context
"Health definition
However, there is some limitation with this definition"
Student B: *still waiting*
Student A: "You know, limitation is like st you cant cross. This is the limit, if you are over this, you cross the limitation. Miss, do you get what I mean"
Me asking student B: "Do you know the word drawback"
Student B: no Miss
Me thinking for a while: "Ok let me explain for you like this. This is the Health definition. It was written a long time ago. However, it might not be totally correct when you put it in the current situation now. It is too old you know. So that's the limitation of the definition. That is the "not good side" of the definition. You got it?"
Student B: Yah I got it now
Me talking to student A: "In this situation, you should try to explain to her using synonym such as drawback, negative side, not some limit that people may go over. Because in this context, it is not correct"
Student A: Yah we got it. Thanks Ms.
